Traditionally, when companies add new products into their lineups, they reconsider prices of other family members in order to better position them within their lineups and against competition. For some reason, AMD has no plans to lower prices of its Radeon R9-series graphics cards after the addition of the Radeon R9 285.
As reported, on September 2, 2014, Advanced Micro Devices plans to start selling of the Radeon R9 285, the first graphics card based on the code-named Tonga graphics processor and the GCN 1.2 architecture. While various versions of the novelty will clearly compete against lower-end and higher-and AMD Radeon R9 models, AMD does not have plans to review its recommended prices on graphics cards.
Starting September 2, 2014, AMD’s official Radeon R9-series prices will look as follows:
- AMD Radeon R9 270 2GB - $179
- AMD Radeon R9 270X 2GB - $199
- AMD Radeon R9 285 2GB - $249
- AMD Radeon R9 280X 3GB - $299
- AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB - $399
- AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB - $549AMD Radeon R9 295X2 8GB - $1499
Prices on most of the Radeon R9-series graphics cards were set last fall when they were launched, which means that it might be the time to slash some of the prices in order to make them more competitive. For some reasons, AMD has no plans to do that this fall. Perhaps, the company will lower prices towards the holiday season, when it launches its new flagship graphics chip based on the GCN 1.2 architecture, but that introduction is months away.
According to Jon Peddie Research (JPR), total AIB shipments decreased to 11.5 million units (a 17.6% drop year-over-year) in the Q2 2014. Nvidia Corp. dominated the market with 62% market share, whereas AMD’s market share grew slightly to 37.9%.
AMD did not comment on the news-story.
